Activities and Actions

It is important in our organisation that we pursue change and results which benefit Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. FAIRA was created by communities to address negative policies and practices inbuilt into Australian social identity and systems of governance. To be effective and accountable, and always transparent, FAIRA operates according to principles of education, awareness-raising and information research.

It is important in our organisation that we pursue change and results which benefit Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

FAIRA efforts entail raising the voice of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities through greater participation in MEDIA, using mainstream media as well as community-owned and operated media. We seek out important information which often does not get reported and we take to task biased media which entrenches racist values in society.

Wherever possible we bring forward the voice and concerns of our community through FAIRA EVENTS which host Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander advocates for justice and for change. This includes lectures, seminars, workshops and conferences, all of which help to strengthen to voice of community. FAIRA maintains a calendar of events which explain the issues that might confuse interested people, and raises understanding for students of race politics in Australia.

From time to time, subject to financial support from government or community, FAIRA undertakes projects in the community to address problems of disadvantage. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in Australia remain oppressed through poverty, exploitation and biased values, policies and practices. While there is a long history or welfare and social services emanating from government with intention to deal with social disadvantages there continues to be reluctance and opposition to political and economic development for communities. FAIRA PROJECTS target development in political and economic terms, ensuring future generations are not denied self-determination and continue to be forced to assimilate into the dominant mainstream Australian society.

FAIRA identifies and seeks to implement strategic actions to overcome Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander disadvantages.

FAIRA identifies and seeks to implement strategic actions to overcome Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander disadvantages. Due to resource limitations FAIRA develops select CAMPAIGNS to make changes which benefit the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The campaigns target high level change, through political, legal and civil engagement. To have the best effect FAIRA relies upon the preparation of well-documented correspondence and targeted SUBMISSIONS to parliamentary and legal inquiries.

The most valuable tool for FAIRA to pursue beneficial change is the voice of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. FAIRA builds the voice through SURVEYS amongst our population. FAIRA believes that surveys carried out in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community will help defeat ignorance and confusion about the interests of the community.
