A Torres Strait Islander man charged with breaches of the Fisheries Act had his charges adjourned while lawyers reassessed the alleged offence in light of the recent Murrandoo Yanner High Court hearing.



Women's historic report on violence
The Queensland Government says it plans to respond to the Report of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women's Task Force with a "whole of Government" strategy early in 2000.




Legislation makes international pariah of Australia

Queensland Indigenous Working Group calls for federal rejection of state native title legislation
The Queensland Indigenous Working Group used a meeting with Federal Attorney-General Daryl Williams on December 2 to raise concerns about both state and commonwealth native title legislation.



Mabo of the Seas
The Northern Land Council expects that native title holders will appeal against a Federal Court decision relating to the Croker Island Seas native title case.


Preamble to the Geneva declaration on health
WE, the representatives of Indigenous communities, nations, peoples and organisations attending the International Consultation on the Health of Indigenous Peoples, held in Geneva from the 23-26 November 1999, and organised by the World Health Organisation, reaffirm our right of self-determination and remind states of their responsibilities and obligations under international law concerning health, including the health of Indigenous Peoples.




Racism and The Courier-Mail newspaper
The letter at the end of this article was sent to The Courier-Mail, which has refused to print it in the 'Letters to the Editor' section. The letter was addressed to the chief reporter, Tony Koch, who attacked QIWG for opposing the Queensland Native Title laws.

Beggars can't be choosers or a window of opportunity?
Asking for an apology from the Prime Minister was, as has been stated many times, asking for the highest level of government to admit that white privilege in this country owes its existence to dispossession of Indigenous people. Fresh calls from Indigenous leaders were triggered following South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu's references to his own country and international apologies for atrocities. Tutu, speaking on the ABC's 7:30 Report, proclaimed: It is the strong that can say sorry - not the weak.

National call for sea rights
Aboriginal people from across Australia have called on all Australian governments to recognise Indigenous ownership and management of the sea, inland waterways and their resources.

Past approaches to loss of value
Earlier articles in LRQ in this series have considered the evolving contrast between Indigenous values and anglo-Australian concepts of value. However, it is not generally acknowledged that the question of the value of property rights adversely affected by public works has been the subject of extensive inquiry in land and valuation law and practice for many years. These historic inquiries may have relevance to native title.

World conference against racism
The office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights is hosting a world conference against racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance at a date to be decided in 2001.

Cybertracker Capes
LAST week I had the opportunity to see the outcome of 5 years work by a group of Pitjanjatjara elders. They have been writing their stories and have matched them with video clips and voice-overs of past events. All this was then placed on computer by those elders and a final CD-ROM disk has been produced.
