Native Title laws under
scrutiny yet again

Australia's Native Title laws will again come under international scrutiny at next month's meeting of the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (CERD).

Recently the Federal and Queensland governments released a report, Towards a South-East Queensland Regional Forest Agreement: A Directions Report, for public comment.




Local Government meet to discuss Native Title
The Local Government Association of Queensland recently held six Native Title seminars throughout the State to allow Councils to meet and discuss Native Title issues.



Honour for NLC Chair
Over 200 north east Arnhem Land people last month witnessed the Governor-General Sir William Deane bestow a special award on the Northern Land Council Chairman Galarrwuy Yunupingu.

Brisbane Mabo Day Celebrations1999
Brisbane celebrated Mabo Day 1999 in King George Square. Radio station 4AAA broadcast from the Square all day and FAIRA staff and volunteers provided breakfast and lunch to passers by. Indigenous dancers and performers put on a good show for all and the Papunya Women kept people captivated with their paintings and dances.



Brisbane Land Interest Forum
FAIRA/Brisbane City Council (BCC) held a three-day Land Interest Forum last month to foster a better understanding of land management issues in the Brisbane City Council area.



Starcke, Lakefield to be returned to Traditional Owners
The Beattie Government has announced that two of Queensland's most prominent wilderness areas will be handed back to their Traditional Owners.





SA's First cross-border Native Title claim
Aboriginal Legal Rights Movement's (ALRM) Native Title Unit and the Goolburri Land Council are developing the Yandruwandha-Yawarrawarrka and Wangkumara Native Title application.


ALP Life Membership for Aborigine
Aboriginal and Labor Party activist Paddy Jerome was awarded the meritorious service award of Life Membership at the Queensland ALP's annual conference in June.




Torres Strait Islander artist appointed to Queensland Art Gallery Board
Torres Strait Islander artist and curator Brian Robinson has been appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Queensland Art Gallery in Brisbane.




Tent Embassy ceremonial-fire case dismissed after DPP steps in
Canberra's Tent Embassy elders were outraged at the intervention of the Director of Public Prosecutions in their case against senior National Capital Authority members and two police officers.




FAIRA sets up new agency
FAIRA Aboriginal Corporation has set up a new agency to deal with the important Indigenous cultural heritage and biodiversity issues which emerge under Native Title.




SA Native Title changes
The South Australian Native Title Bill, due to be debated in the July session of the South Australian parliament, is racist, according to the Aboriginal Legal Rights Movement (ALRM).




Delivering Overdue Justice
The June issue of Land Rights Queensland reported on the Queensland Government's historic decision to work on a process for compensating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were under-paid while working for previous Queensland Governments.

The Mirrar people, Traditional Owners of the area over which the Jabiluka uranium mine is located, have received support from 34 members of the United States Congress in their efforts to have Kakadu National Park declared "In-Danger" by the United Nations' World Heritage Committee.

  • As a result of a decision by the University of Wollongong to cut its Indigenous health course, students responded by erecting 12 tents outside the University's administration building.
  • The Lockhart Aboriginal community has been granted $80,000 to set up a domestic violence service.
  • Preston Resources, the developer of a nickel and cobalt at Maryborough near Rockhampton, has referred to arbitration its negotiations with Traditional Owners on Native Title issues over the mine.
  • The State Government has provided $148,807 funding to the Tableland Economic Development Corporation to further develop the Mareeba Wetlands.

Traditional fishing rights upheld
Lawyers for Perth Aboriginal Medical Service Director Ted Wilkes were successful last month in having Mr Wilkes' conviction for poaching undersize marron overturned. They argued that he had a Native Title right to fish.




DÄR Festival 1999
The DÄR Festival, an initiative of the Brisbane City Council (BCC) and the Brisbane Council of Elders, was held from 27 May to 6 June.




Native Elder for Masses
An elder of the Undumbi people spoke at three Masses in Nambour parish to mark the beginning of NAIDOC week.

The Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation launched its long-awaited Draft Document for Reconciliation across Australia on June 3, marking the start of a six-month public consultation period.

ATSIC's Home Ownership Program
The ATSIC Home Ownership Program fills a genuine need for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Currently less than 32 percent of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people own or are buying their own home, while more than 65 percent of non-Indigenous Australians own or are buying their own home.

In 1990, property developers Farndale Pty Ltd put a proposal to build a tourism resort on the boundary of the Lockhart River Aboriginal community on the east coast of Cape York

The last two weeks have been one of chaos and mayhem. No, not in the real world but here at the cafe. Because of the school holidays I have had a full house each week. The most popular game has been Quake 2 networked. If you have not seen this game, the basic idea is to shoot anything that moves. If you cannot kill it then get a bigger gun and try again.
