Brisbane celebrated Mabo Day 1999 in King George Square.
Radio station 4AAA broadcast from the Square all day and
FAIRA staff and volunteers provided breakfast and lunch to
passers by. Indigenous dancers and performers put on a good
show for all and the Papunya Women kept people captivated
with their paintings and
dances.

- The Lockhart Aboriginal community has been granted
$80,000 to set up a domestic violence service.
- Preston Resources, the developer of a nickel and
cobalt at Maryborough near Rockhampton, has referred to
arbitration its negotiations with Traditional Owners on
Native Title issues over the mine.
- The State Government has provided $148,807 funding to
the Tableland Economic Development Corporation to further
develop the Mareeba Wetlands.

Lawyers for Perth Aboriginal Medical Service Director Ted
Wilkes were successful last month in having Mr Wilkes'
conviction for poaching undersize marron overturned. They
argued that he had a Native Title right to fish.

Program fills a genuine need for Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander peoples. Currently less than 32 percent of

home.
