Second Indigenous Senator Likely
In a federal election which has been full of mixed messages for Indigenous people one clear triumph is emerging - the likely election of prominent Aboriginal activist Aden Ridgeway to the Senate.



Livid Alive with Indigenous Acts
Apart from being one of the country's most popular and successful youth music festivals, the recent 1998 Livid Festival also made a loud statement about the rights of Australia's Indigenous people.



Elders: in the International Year of Older People
The International Year of Older People is designed to increase the recognition of the contributions which Older people make to society, to improve community attitudes to Older people and growing older, and to create a better awareness of issues important to the elderly.



Heritage Act to Change
The Commonwealth is acting to move responsibility for indigenous cultural heritage protection and conservation, environmental laws and native title administration to the States and Territories.





Costello Lashes Howard Over Reconciliation
The Reverend Tim Costello, who is the brother of Federal Treasurer Peter Costello, has attacked John Howard's approach to reconciliation as 'dangerous' and 'like Deutchland Uber Alles' (a reference to the politics of Nazi Germany).

Milk of life blacklisted
Northern Territory laws which have incarcerated a nursing mother for a minor offence and separated her from her newborn baby reflect a brutal attitude and contravene human rights.



We will fight to protect Country: Margarula
When Mirrar Senior Traditional Owner Yvonne Margarula is asked how the Mirrar will win their campaign to stop the proposed Jabiluka uranium mine - against the might of the Commonwealth Government and mining giant ERA - her response is straightforward: "We will fight to protect Country. That is a fact of life."




Queensland Native Title: The State of Play
The Federal Government passed its amended Ten Point Plan legislation in July this year, and in doing so effectively passed the buck on Native Title to the States. Now State governments are in the position of having to pass their own legislation on Native Title.

ON August 26th 1998, the Queensland State Government passed the Native Title (State Provisions) Act 1998, effectively adopting much of John Howard's so called 'Ten Point Plan'.

Anti-Racist Body Attacked by Former Minister
The activities of Racewatch, a new Melbourne-based anti-racist organisation, have been attacked by former Hawke Government Minister Peter Walsh as "tittle-tattle...political cleansing" and "thought police".

Global Survival and Indigenous Rights Conference
Friends of the Earth Australia (FoEA) is organising a three-day conference for community-based people which focusses on Aboriginal land management practices and decision-making structures, and on how non-Indigenous people can work more closely and effectively through recognising these bodies.



Indigenous Territorians Reject Statehood
The people of the Northern Territory appear to have rejected a proposal that would have seen their Territory's status change to match that of the Australian States.
