The United Nations has been told racism remains a powerful force in Australia which pervades both political and legal institutions. The claim has come for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Commission. ATSIC made submissions against Australia's record this week to both the UN's Committee for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and, today, the UN Commission on Human Rights. ATSIC's submission to the UNCHR highlights Australian what it calls inaction on mandatory sentencing and the the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody. It also lists the Stolen Generations inquiry and the Wik amendments to the Native Title Act. ATSIC chairman GEOFF CLARK says the government apparently does not understand its obligations under the international treaties that Australia has ratified. Meanwhile, Attorney-General DARYL WILLIAMS says the federal government will not bend to likely United Nations condemnation of mandatory sentencing laws. |
