Labor promises Wik amendments will end discrimination
AAP April 11, 1:33 PM A federal Labor government would amend the Wik native title legislation, Opposition Leader Kim Beazley told the party caucus today. A caucus spokesman said Mr Beazley had promised to remove discriminatory elements of the government's Wik amendments to the Native Title Act, after consulting with all interested parties. 'A Beazley government, when it amends the act, will work with all stakeholders to deliver an outcome that all Australians can live with,' Mr Beazley told the meeting. 'Labor will ensure that the amended legislation does not discriminate against the interest of indigenous Australians and is consistent with Australia's international undertakings.' Mr Beazley told Labor MPs and senators a Labor government would include subsequent court decisions in the amendments and make sure they were consistent with the Racial Discrimination Act. The government had earlier accused Labor of hypocrisy for not committing to repealing the contentious elements of the 1998 amendments, which extinguished native title on leased land. |
